Dear PS.101Q Community,

We are so excited to have the Save for College Program as part of our school, thanks to our partnership with the nonprofit NYC Kids RISE.

All Kindergarten Families citywide can participate in the NYC Kids RISE Save for College Program: a scholarship and savings program that provides families, schools, and communities with a way to work together to invest in their children’s futures.

This opt-out program is available to kindergarten students, no matter the family’s income or immigration status. Take a look at this short video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Pe9OjxJS34 with more information about the program.

This program has two parts: Scholarship and Savings. To get every family started, your child will be automatically enrolled in this program and receive an NYC Scholarship Account with a free $100 initial deposit from NYC Kids RISE. Programs like these are more important than ever in supporting families with resources to create a financial foundation for students’ educational futures.

To learn more, check out this short Save for College Program video and the attached materials, https://nyckidsrise.org/downloadable-resources/.

If you want to participate you don’t have to do anything since it’s an opt-out program. This means that your child will automatically be enrolled as long as you TAKE NO ACTION during the upcoming opt-out process.

What’s next? After your 30 day opportunity to opt out is over, if you have chosen to stay in the program, your child’s NYC Scholarship Account will be funded and opened by NYC Kids RISE. You will then receive information about how to activate and view the account from NYC Kids RISE. We will share information and host events throughout the year about the program and how we can work together as a community to save and plan for your child’s future.

If you have any questions, contact our parent coordinator. You can also call NYC Kids RISE at 833-543-7473 or email info@nyckidsrise.org.

Sincerely,

PS.101Q

Dear Families,

It has been brought to our attention that parents are parking cars around the school perimeter during arrival time. This is causing unsafe conditions for our students and families crossing the streets. To alleviate the congestion and unsafe conditions noted, we are kindly asking that you please park your cars on the side blocks and avoid double parking or blocking any student entrances.

We have also noted that many students are being dropped off at the main entrance to enter school during morning arrival at 8:15 a.m. This is creating a safety issue because the main entrance is designated for our Pre-K students only during regular morning arrival. All other students must line up at their designated entrance door spots and wait for their teachers to enter the building.

Finally, as per DOE policy we would like to remind all parents that masks are always required when entering the school building for any reason and when on school grounds. This includes the school playground, and all students and adults are to keep their masks on for everyone's safety. We thank you for your attention to this matter. By working together to follow all safety protocols, we can continue to ensure the safety of our school community.

Best,

Evelyn Giamadakis

Assistant Principal

Dear P.S. 101Q Community,

Parent Teacher Conferences are a wonderful opportunity for you to meet with your child’s teacher and learn about the progress he/she is making. Parent-Teacher conferences will be held virtually this year on Thursday, November 4th, 2021. In the attached document, which was also backpacked home, teachers are asking for your time slot preference as they schedule conferences. Please send this form back to your child’s teacher. Should any family prefer an in person conference, please reach out to your child’s teacher via email. All email addresses are on the school website at www.ps101Q.org.

All report cards will be in your child(ren)’s New York City Student Account (NYCSA). Should you have issues accessing your child’s account, please contact Ms. Chevry via email at MChevry@schools.nyc.gov.

Dear P.S. 101Q Community,

As you know, because of a shortage of school aides, certain classes have been eating lunch in the auditorium where they are monitored by the Assistant Principals. We are happy to announce that we have been able to hire three additional lunch aides and, as of tomorrow, all students will be able to eat lunch in their own classrooms.Due to COVID test and trace protocols, students must still remain in their pods (classes) during lunch.

The auditorium will only be utilized for emergency cases such as school aide absences. We are hopeful that this option is rarely needed.

Classroom teachers take students outside for Outdoor Learning/Play once a day for a full period in lieu of a 15 minute recess break. This allows for students to safely spend more time outside without leaving their pods (classes).  Even when outdoors, students must remain in their pods (classes) for test and trace purposes.

Sincerely,
Ms. Paniagua

Principal

Dear P.S. 101Q Families,

We are excited to announce details regarding class parties and our Parents as Learning Partners program.

Class Parties

Celebrations have long been a beautiful tradition at P.S. 101Q.  We are thrilled to bring back our class parties this year.  We recommend non-food parties with arts and crafts or other fun activities.  However, should you decide to have a food party, we ask that you coordinate with the teacher to be aware of any allergies that students in the class may have.  All parties should be on one of the dates provided and scheduled with the teachers for about 50 minutes.

Your Class Parent(s) will organize these parties on behalf of the class (in coordination with the teacher) and will be in touch with you in advance.  Unfortunately, due to COVID and classroom capacity, parents are unable to attend.  We are hoping it will be different next year, as we love having our parents in the school.

  1. Octoberfest – October 29th
  2. Thanksgiving – Will be a Giving Campaign and Community Service
  3. Winter Celebrations – December 21st and 22nd
  4. Lunar New Year – January 31st
  5. Valentine’s Day – February 14th
  6. St. Patrick’s Day – March 17th
  7. Earth Day Celebrations – April 12th or April 13th
  8. End of the Year Celebrations – June 22nd and 23rd

Parents as Learning Partners

One of the highlights of our school year is welcoming parents to engage with students by sharing lessons in the classroom.  We are thankful that we can bring back this tradition this year.  Due to classroom capacity restrictions, we are hosting PALP virtually this year.  Of course, we would rather be in person; but the students will be so excited to see parents up on the 75 inch Promethean Boards or Smartboards in their rooms!   Historically, parents have provided lessons about their cultures, careers or social-emotional intelligence.

Over the years, I have enjoyed observing parents conduct read alouds or teach other fun lessons.  We recommend that parents collaborate with the Class Parent(s) and teachers to schedule their time.  You should expect to receive an email shortly from your Class Parent(s) asking for PALP volunteers. Parents can sign on LIVE with students or they can pre-record lessons to be shown to the class.  We only ask that the teacher is made aware of the content of the lessons beforehand.  PALP dates are as follows:

  1. October 22nd
  2. November 19th
  3. December 17th
  4. January 21st
  5. February 18th
  6. March 25th
  7. April 8th
  8. May 20th

Sincerely,

M. Chevry, PC

Dear P.S. 101Q Community,

In order to provide an opportunity for families to see the health and safety protocols in place, the school administration in collaboration with the Parent’s Association executive board will host in person walking tours of your child(ren’s) classrooms. Members of the Superintendent’s district office will also be present to observe and support. Classroom tours will take place on Thursday, October 14th, 2021.

We will provide three sessions so that families can see multiple grades should they have more than one student attending our school. A staff member will escort you to the class on your child’s grade so that you can observe the class set up. The set up in each classroom has students sitting three feet apart with two air purifiers.

The sessions will be as follows:

3:00pm – 3:20pm

3:20pm – 3:40pm

3:40pm – 4:00pm

Should you have more than one student at the school, feel free to join us for more than one time slot to view different grades.

Kindergarten – Second grade families will enter through the back of the gymnasium. In the gymnasium, staff members will meet families. Families will be escorted to their child’s classroom.

Third grade families can enter through the Rotunda. Families will meet the staff member on the second floor, through the Rotunda stairwell. Families will be escorted to see the third grade classrooms.

Fourth grade families can enter through Russell Place, at their usual entryway. The staff member will meet the families on the first floor. Families will be escorted to the fourth grade classes on the second and third floors.

Fifth grade families will enter through Russell Place, at the usual entryway. Families will go up to the third floor through the center stairwell. A staff member will be there to escort you to your child’s classroom.

Tours will be repeated every 20 minutes in order to give families the opportunity to see multiple grades should they have children in different grades.

Please note that all families that attend this class tour must show proof of vaccination upon entering the building and wear a mask.

Sincerely,

Monique Paniagua Monique Paniagua,

Dear Families,

I realize that due to daily responsibilities you are not able to assist some of our parent workshops. I wouldn't want you to miss out on any information, so I created a folder where you can find the presentations as well as any handouts that may have been shared out. This also helps to have a point of reference.

September 29, 2021

Dear Families,

Please note the latest guidance that we have received from the Department of Education, as it is consistent with CDC guidance.

A student who is exposed to an infected student in the classroom will not have to quarantine if both students were properly wearing a face covering and maintained at least three feet of distance from one another.

Students that do not have on a mask for breakfast or lunch and are 6 feet away or less for 15 minutes or more, will be listed as close contact. The Test and Trace Department will make the final determination for quarantine.

All unvaccinated students who are designated as close contacts and who remain asymptomatic during quarantine may return to school eight (8) days after the last day of exposure with a lab-confirmed negative COVID result from a test taken five (5) days or later, after exposure.

Ms. Paniagua has requested of the NYCDOE to inform all families in the class if there is a positive case. The ultimate decision will be up to the NYCDOE. Information is forthcoming.

Sincerely,

School Administration
